About the Jewellery Museum
Unique of its kind, Pforzheim’s Jewellery Museum is devoted exclusively to jewellery and its history. Be that as part of a mythology, to emphasise status or simply as decoration: jewellery has a long tradition in all cultures. Ever since the dawn of humanity, people have adorned themselves with chains, rings, body painting, pendants, belts and headdresses. The forms of these decorations are just as diverse as the materials used. Some 2,000 exhibits bear witness to the rich diversity of jewellery created over the course of five millennia, from prehistoric times to the present day. The museum’s highlights include exquisite specimens from Greek and Etruscan antiquity and from the Renaissance and the Baroque periods, as well as outstanding examples of Art Nouveau jewellery, plus its unique collection of contemporary art jewellery.
With online exhibitions, we now open the door to a new field of experimentation that is not restricted by the limitations of physical space. The virtual crystal world of the current fashion photography exhibition was designed by Kay Prühs – it makes reference in equal measure to the geometric shapes of precious stones in jewellery and to the architecture of the Reuchlinhaus that houses the Jewellery Museum. Multimedia elements are used, resulting in a hybrid – a virtual exhibition in the format of a film.
